Sclerotherapy

In the treatment of spider veins and small varicose veins, various methods are used. One of them is sclerotherapy, which we perform at VENA CLINIC. It consists of administering a chemical agent into the lumen of the vessel through a small puncture in order to damage the vein wall. It is used in the treatment of spider veins on the legs, and the procedure is preceded by Doppler ultrasound, thanks to which it is possible to determine the potential source of the problem and eliminate it.

What is sclerotherapy?

This method involves administering a chemical sclerosing agent into the lumen of the vein. Treatment of spider veins on the legs is often based on sclerotherapy, which is used to close reticular vessels with a diameter greater than 3 mm and smaller. However, during the procedure, we additionally use Doppler ultrasound to visualize the course of the vein.

The mentioned procedure causes a controlled inflammation and, as a consequence, fibrosis and obliteration of the vessel. In turn, the therapeutic and aesthetic effect of single-zone sclerotherapy depends to a large extent on the complexity of the venous system anatomy.

Contraindications to the procedure include, for example, allergy to a sclerosing agent, acute deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and prolonged immobilization. After the procedure, the limb is bandaged with an elastic bandage or a graduated compression stocking is applied (usually worn for 10-14 days) and the patient is advised to walk for half an hour.

Treatment of spider veins on legs

These are aesthetic and health problems. Dilated blood vessels mean the first symptoms of venous insufficiency. Spider veins on the legs can be the result of:

• hormonal disorders,
• smoking cigarettes,
• wearing high-heeled shoes,
• wearing clothes that are too tight,
• frequent consumption of alcohol and coffee,
• long-term stress,
• genetic conditions.

In the treatment of spider veins on the legs, single-zone sclerotherapy can be a stand-alone procedure or a complement to thermal or surgical methods. This procedure aims to remove vascular changes, alleviate symptoms, and prevent and treat complications of chronic venous diseases.
